| As I sat on the back porch one day seeking comfort, I was consoled by a hummingbird. This amazing bird that rarely rests was sitting on a nearby bucket. Not too many people get to see a hummingbird rest, they buzz around so quickly. On this special occasion, not only did I see a hummingbird rest, I got to pet a hummingbird. I had been so busy caring for my husband who was battling late stage cancer that I rarely got a chance to rest. I tried not to rest. It allowed time to worry. On this occasion I was in tears for my passing husband. That’s when God sent the hummingbird. A hummingbird is so busy that it must eat continuously during its waking hours. Indeed it must eat more than its body weight every day. The smallest hummingbird flaps its wings 50-70 times per second. It must constantly move to get enough food and it needs food because it moves constantly. When this bird rested in my view I knew God was talking to me. My heart found joy for the day. I got to pet a hummingbird. And I knew as the hummingbird rested for moments, I too would rest only a short time. Brad has gone home to be with Jesus. My rest is for a short season. If I am not busy about my Father’s work I will perish from hunger. Daily I will feast on God’s Word, to move on in His will. |
